Posted - 25 Jul 2008 : 17:36:15 Official DMC statement in regards to the DMC World Team Championship.
DMC have decided to allow DJs to move with the times whilst protecting the integrity of the art and allowing them to embrace modern playback technology.
These decisions are being made at the behest of DJs and our international branches who want to move their events into the 21st century whilst remaining loyal to pure turntablism.
Under any circumstances we don’t see the DMC World Championships ever dropping turntable/vinyl as the main focus.
Once we see how it develops at the World Finals and we have met with our international branches, our decisions for expanding use of equipment in the future will be made. So we’ll let the Teams take on the challenge and judge once we have seen the results and, most importantly, the fan’s reactions. The equipment allowed in the DMC Team event are : Technics Turntables, Ortofon needles, Digital software (Serato, Traktor, Mix Vibes.....), Loop Stations (ie type Roland RC-20 or 50) and analogue or digital Mixers (internal or external).

Posted - 28 Jul 2008 : 09:59:41 I welcome this move. I do think that it would be a good idea for the teams to do a Q&A session with the judges about the sets at the prelims - the equipment used, and how they interact with each other etc. I'd hate to see the judges paying as much attention as they sometimes do (distracted, drunk, high, asleep) when judging sets as technically complex as they potentially could be. And I don't imagine that it would be too hard to hide a 6 minute pre-made set behind a flurry of button bashing, frantic fader action and stage antics.
You'll also have to give serious thought to the rules on gear failure and restarts too. |

Posted - 28 Jul 2008 : 08:57:47 This is the right step forward, DMC have given the opportunity for turntablist to enter the teams lifting major restrictions allowing them to be more creative.
Regarding Blakey's comment on the loop stations, and Sally's point on the cash flow restrictions for DJ's are both valid.
May be (if practicable) DMC can set a differnt type of scoring criteria for judges based on the equipment used per team ?? which could help balance it out.

Posted - 26 Jul 2008 : 15:57:38 I second what loop has said.
I think that incorporating mixers with effects, along with Serato will make Team routines more dynamic....It also opens up a lot more possibilities with creating a set.
Sally - with regards to the cue points in Serato, would MIDI controllers (such as the MPD 24 & MPD 32) be allowed to activate the loops/cue points/track selections? |

Posted - 26 Jul 2008 : 00:26:51 I think its a good idea for teams, not sure about the solo catagories unless a new producer/experimental catagory was created.Deffo a good call for the teams tho. |

Posted - 25 Jul 2008 : 20:31:23 sounds like a really interesting idea. Gotta agree with Blakey though about the Loopstation. It might be difficult for the judges as it's a foot controlled pedal on the floor so will be hard to tell when it's being used. Serato is a great idea. The amount of deejays I've seen out and about using it is scary. Looking forward to seeing how this contest works |

Posted - 25 Jul 2008 : 18:29:04 but look, all your opinions count, i want to know what everyone thinks, because this is the first year we have allowed this, so its an expirement too... just trying to move with the times.... |

Posted - 25 Jul 2008 : 18:25:13 Loop Stations was suggested for those DJs who cannot afford Pioneer 909's etc.
We have said any mixers too. |

Posted - 25 Jul 2008 : 18:21:38 Loop stations is a bad idea IMHO.
For a start, you can't actually see them because they will be on the floor, so it will be unclear when they are being used, plus you just don't need them if you are using digital software. The DJ will either use the loop function in their software, or edit their audio accordingly.
You really should just allow laptops and time coded vinyl. Maybe the Pioneer 909, as this is still a very visual way of using effects.
What does everybody else think? |
