| f**king concentrate on your own s**t , develop your own style stop relying on tutorial dvds. This whole art form is supposed to be about individual interpretation and expression. |

| School isn't about learning it's about social conditioning, it's about how the individual can be moulded to fit into society and what method do they use to teach the sheep, dictation. School is not about individual interpretation or expression, Turntablism is art, true art is selfish it's primary purpose is to express the thoughts of a sole person not to conform via dictation find another f**king analogy. |

To be honest ive learnt so much from tutorial vids lately its unbelievable...when i practise on my own i seem to get stuck in set ways and dont progress at all...i need to watch other people doing easy stuff i should be able to do and it inspires me...i guess qbert has the mentality that if he sees anyone doing a scratch he has to learn it, master it and do it better than them, thats how he can lay claim to being the absolute master....... also watching tutorial stuff helps u improve...cos u practise alone and u start thinking ur getting dope etc then u watch say DIY and u realise theres hella stuff u need to master. I just wanna make sounds that sound dope...im pretty new to it +in the position now im not gonna create anything new...i mean ill try....but are u realistically gonna create something q hasnt done already ? (i mean excluding getting ridiculouly technical with finger styles etc) theres so few people that will ever realise youve created something....(especially where i play!) that i may as well spend my time sounding good when i get the chance...thats the real art i think, and possibly the hardest part!
Regarding whether q can beat juggle....at the risk of boring you...let me tell u a story! me and my boy went out to NY to watch him perform at the battlesounds festival 4...it was like the first time hed played in NY for like 4 years so was quite a big thing...he proceeded to do this hella funky (at the time) juggle that did seem way ahead of its time then...so yeh i think he keeps up with the latest styles... from watching TTTV vids over the years u can see he has a massive collection of battle tapes...i reckon as soon as he sees anyone doing a new technique he probably masters it, then adds his own twist!
oh yeh...going back to the creating scratches thing...at an in store he did a day prior to this...Yoga was asking if anyone had new scratches they wanted to show him...this poor guy came up with his suggestion...(i mean he seemed like an accomplished scratcher etc) and q was just like " nah i think ull find this is just this this and this" The poor dude did argue his case for a while...but everyone just thought...forget it ur not gonna impress Q!

Just for the record if you read my original reply you may note that I made a rallying cry to stop RELYING on tutorial DVDs/videos. I did not say that Turntablists should stop using them to aid their development, I own five tutorial DVDs/videos. Although I've never stood in front of a TV screen and copied what DJ X,Y,Z or Q were doing, the first video alone provided me with enough inspiration to practice until my hands could not take anymore.
I rarely perform in public but on the few occasions I have a small minority of people have become interested in the art form. Due to the way I learnt to scratch and beat juggle I have had great difficulty verbally communicating turntable techniques this is when tutorial DVDs have become essential because it makes it easier for those unfamiliar with Turntablisim to familiarize themselves with the concept.
I've never once claimed that I am devoid of outside influence in order to learn we all watch others my comments have been primarily aimed at the bastard offspring of Q-bert who seek imitation over expression. I'd also like clarify my point about style, from my perspective style is the overall presentation of technique while techniques are the individual technical components of a style. I've never claimed in this forum or anywhere else to have created my own techniques this is of course very difficult and something thats only been done by a small group of exceptional Tablists- keep creating peace. |

| This is where it all started, note how I apologize for my aggressive writing style without attemping to insult anyone, I'm for peace but if you attack me I'll slap you back into place. If you had pointed out that I was mistaken I would have left it and said sorry, you are going way out of your league do not f**k with me. |

| sandalwood girl you seem easily annoyed, thats not an insult, merely an observation. I dont think tutorial DVDs are a bad thing as long as you dont have qberts volume 1 and 2 playing through your mixer duplicating every sound. Do you think locking yourself in a room with turntables without any outside input would produce a DJ as competent as a DJ who had learned as part of the collective DJ'ing culture? The more the merryer thats what i say. |

I cant understand where her post came from either..who was making an attack on her? I can see both sides for and against for tutorial vids and was merely expressing my opinion...no intention to offend! Like Roli Rho said...you can only really feel proud of learning something if you get it for yourself...not having someone show you,
then again...If we want the turntable to be taken as seriously as other instruments then the more easily accessible instructional material available the better, and we have to accept that people will want to learn with the sole motive being to recreate a cool sound...rather than place a priority on innovation...if someone is musical with their scratching, melodical, funky and rhythmic, then I'm all for that...whether its a baby scratch or 3 click flare. I mean..does anyone learn piano with the intention of changing the artform ? |
